Marrakech – This city has it’s own magic! The fragrances, the colorful markets and the hustle and bustle will enthrall you! We are totally fascinated by the city cause you can still find culture and tradition in it’s purest form. The people in Marrakech are funloving and sociable and mainly very helpful. In this post we’ll share our experiences regarding what to see, where to eat and shop and above all some tips about what you should be aware of as a tourist! If you’re also looking for hotel recommendations you can have a look at our posts here and here where we presented two beautiful riads at which we stayed during our trip.

  • die Medina (Altstadt): bester Ort zum Shoppen / the medina (oldtown): best place to shop

You can easily get lost in the Medina, especially when you’re entering the souks (markets) of the oldtown. Nevertheless, you only get to see the real life of Marrakech here. There are people on scooters everywhere, goods are being transported from A to B on donkeys (the funny called „Berber Mercedes“). You’re far from the touristic centres, therefore the prices are a bit lower and the quality is better. But you always have to negotiate, always! If you’re looking for a beautiful and handcrafted moroccan rug like us, we have a real insider tip for you: Go to „Dar Mejbar“, No 24 Rue Amssaffah! There we found our dream rug with geometric pattern and we negotiated it from 2400 MAD to 900 MAD! The rugs can also be shipped to your country. We were lucky, cause our rug fitted into our suitcase thanks to the compact packaging!

What we can also recommend you is the „Nomad“ Restaurant and „Le Jardin„. Both were recommended to us at the hotel, but unfortunately they were closed during the day because of Ramadan.

Last, but not least: Things you should be aware of as a tourist in Marrakech: If you got lost e.g. in the tiny streets of the souks, never follow the young boys that want to show you the way! They just want your money! Always go to a store and ask there. Always negotiate! The vendors will always agree to a lower price, just start with the half of the price! If you want to take photos of the shops and the displays, ask the vendors if its okay for them! Otherwise they could easily get a bit upset! And if you’re looking for the traditional Babouch shoes, only try them on if you’re quite sure that you really want to buy a pair. The shoe vendors might be enraged if you’re leaving without buying a pair after you’ve tried on so many pairs. Apart from that, the people in Marrakech are all so warm and friendly and we can only recommend you to go to Marrakech. If you’re already planning a trip, we wish you a great and unforgettable time and hope you liked this post! xx Su & Chris
